Stunning vintage very early 60’s skirt suit by Jablow for Bonwit Teller. This suit comes from the estate of a woman who was a buyer for Bonwit’s. David Kidd was the designer for Jablow in the 50’s and 60’s, and this suit typifies his designs with its heavier fabric and Chanel influences. Jablow was one of the few American companies authorized to make copies of Chanel designs for the American market. Shown is a photo from the March 15, 1963 issue of Vogue magazine picturing a Chanel coat in this exact fabric, so we can state with assurance that this suit is a copy of a Chanel design.
The suit is fashioned from a heavy mohair boucle with a very fuzzy texture in red, white, and navy tweed. The jacket is a short boxy shape with 3/4 sleeves. The front and collar edges are bound with navy braid and the jacket closes with metal lion head buttons and bound buttonholes. 4 patch pockets adorn the jacket front. It is completely lined in navy China silk. The long slim skirt has a set-on waistband and side nylon zipper. It has two kick slits at the back and is lined in white China silk.
